They stand 1.20 - 2.20 m tall and weigh 60 - 300kg, with a grey-brown fur that lightens in winter. Large feet help them traverse soft ground. Reindeer and caribou are the same species, but the former are more often found domesticated, sedentary, and can be pinto-colored. Males have larger antlers than females and spend summer and autumn growing them. Reindeer are often found in Sápmi, Northern Europe, North America, and Siberia; they play an important role in the cultures of those regions. Most eat grass, but also lichen, moss, and fungi. With rising temperatures in the spring, reindeer are at risk of heat stroke. Since the Stone Age, humans have hunted reindeer for their meat, fur, skin, antlers, and bones. Ancient cultures in Siberia and Scandinavia even domesticated reindeer to use them as transportation in cold climates. Reindeer are capable of living in the harshest conditions, so they can be farmed even in far northern regions.
