After making contact with lands in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Spanish colonial rule was established. While Christopher Columbus did not achieve his intended goal, he did name the people he encountered 'Indians', and declared the new lands part of the Spanish monarchy. This voyage acted as a catalyst for centuries of exploration and colonization of the Americas, as well as the mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples.
